On coaching, test series and mock interviews...

One of the multiple queries I have received from civil services' aspirants is regarding the coaching I attended, the test series and mock interviews I took. So, here goes a list of the different institutes I attended either for coaching, test series or mock interviews. While I attended GS coaching for about 4 months, I didn't take any coaching for my optional as it was also my graduation subject.

Prelims and Mains

1. Vajiram and Ravi - GS (Prelims and Mains) coaching

Since I come from a humanities background (Arts in 11th and 12th and History in graduation), I did not find it particularly useful. My basics were quite clear and coaching did not add much value to my existing knowledge base. Therefore, I would recommend it to those whose basics in history, polity, economy and other such subjects are weak.

2. Vajiram and Ravi - Prelims Test Series

These mock test series were available as part of the GS coaching itself. It involved about 25 tests - 21 tests of GS (sectional and full length) and 4 CSAT tests. I found the test series to be quite robust as post test discussions were held and uploaded onto the portal. Rankings were also given so as to help students see where they stand with respect to their competition.

3. Vision IAS - Prelims Test Series

I took a 25 test long prelims test series along with the Abhyaas test series (3 tests) from Vision IAS. In terms of post test discussion as well as value addition material, I found it to be extremely beneficial. Rankings were also provided here.

4. Vision IAS - Mains Test Series (Taken after my prelims)

I took Mains GS test series from Vision IAS which involved 12 tests (4 full length tests) as well as Abhyaas test series which involved 4 full length tests. The quality and promptness of checking, value addition material and test discussion were excellent. Rankings were also provided. However, the diversity of questions was slightly limited as current affairs questions were usually asked from the Vision IAS current affairs booklets.

5. Vision IAS - Essay Test Series  (Taken after my prelims)

This involved 3 tests and the overall quality remained excellent.

6. Insights IAS - Essay Test Series (Taken before my prelims)

It included 3 tests. It was quite satisfactory

7. Forum IAS - Mains Guidance Program +  (Taken after my prelims)

It included 10 sectional GS tests, 4 full length tests and 4 essay tests. Besides being excellent in terms of promptness, the quality of checking was remarkable. Even the tiniest of mistakes did not go unnoticed. Rankings were also provided. The questions were quite diverse and enabled the candidate to face any sort of questions in the Mains examinations.

8. GS Score - History Optional Test Series

I don't remember exactly the total number of tests (about 12?). I took the test series before my prelims and continued till after.

9. Selfstudyhistory.com - History Optional Test Series (Taken after my prelims)

It included 6 tests - 4 sectional and 2 full length. I was genuinely impressed by the quality of questions, checking, answer pointers as well as promptness.

Interview

I attended mock interviews at Drishti (1), Vision IAS (2), Rau's Study Circle (2) and Chanakya (1). My first interview at Rau's was an eye opener for me as I realized exactly how much I needed to improve myself. My mocks at Chanakya, Drishti and Vision IAS were also quite beneficial.

I would also like to add a disclaimer that these are my personal views and other aspirants' experiences might differ.

Watch this space for my notes, which I shall be posting quite soon!

  2. Hi Chandrajyoti. Congratulations on your achievement! And thank you for being so helpful for us aspirants. Just had a doubt about note making: Did you make different sets of notes for pre and mains, considering the former is factual and the latter analytical? Or will 1-2 A4 sheets per topic do?

    1. My notes were integrated. A-4 sheets per topic will be great and you can add something later, if you miss something out.

    1. Time management plus I blocked off certain days only for tests. This allowed me to focus on revision only on other days.

  8. Hey , Chandrajyoti! Many congratulations on your stunning rank.
Need a little suggestion. I'm preparing for UPSC 2021, took Prelims in 2019, but couldn't sail through.
I'm not feeling very confident about my approach for answer writing, as I'm not able to write any answers at all as of now without referring to sources. What would you suggest?

  9. Wow! This is the first time I am seeing someone do SO many tests. I was just wondering, if you had to pick between vision and forum for one mains test series (as I don't know if I will be able to do more than one), which would you pick? From your blog it seems like it would be forum, but I just wanted to know! I hope you have time to reply!

Book-list (GS)

For the past few days, I've been bombarded with requests for my complete book-list. Quite understandable, as aspirants are confused by the multiplicity of sources available in the market as well as the numerous recommendations by their coaching institutes. Since the syllabus is already pretty vast, there is a need to limit sources and then make notes accordingly, so as to not waste time on books that have a low cost benefit ratio. Without further ado, here's the book-list that I followed. Prelims Paper-1 Current events of national and international importance - The Hindu, InsightsIAS Daily Current Affairs, Vision current affairs compilations, Vajiram current affairs compilations History of India and Indian National Movement - R.S. Sharma's Ancient India, Satish Chandra's Medieval India, Bipan Chandra's Modern India (basically, old NCERTs) and Spectrum's A Brief History of Modern India Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and ...

World History for History Optional

Here are my World history notes for History Optional. I referred to Jain and Mathur, Norman Lowe, selfstudyhistory.com and my own graduation notes for the same. I started making handwritten notes but got super tired and shifted to online notes but that didn't take away the boredom. So, I came back to handwritten notes for the last few units.  CJ's Handwritten Notes for World History (Units 16-27) CJ's Online Notes for World History (Units 16-27) With this, I conclude my notes for History Optional! Hope these help you out!

Ancient India Part I for History Optional

These are the notes I made for Ancient India (Units 1-6). I referred to Professor Upinder Singh's   A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India: From the Stone Age to the 12th Century mostly while R.S. Sharma's Ancient India and IGNOU's BA Notes served as my base and supplementary readings respectively. I referred to the syllabus as well as the past year questions constantly while making these notes. Watch this space for the remainder of my notes! CJ's Ancient India Notes Part I (Units 1-6)
